Citation Building Services

Burroughs Digital provides citation building services — the creation, correction, and standardization of your business listings across the web. A citation is any place your business’s name, address, and phone number (NAP) appear: directories, maps services, data aggregators, industry platforms, chamber sites. Individually, each is small; collectively, they are how Google corroborates that your business is real, located where you claim, and offering what you say.

Citations are the entity-verification layer of local SEO — unglamorous, foundational, and one of the few pieces of SEO that can be done completely and then largely maintained. Which is exactly how a data-driven agency likes its work. Request a free audit and we’ll include a citation accuracy scan.

Why Consistency Is the Entire Game

Google builds confidence in your business entity by cross-referencing sources. When your website, Google Business Profile, and eighty listings all state the same name, the same phone number, and the same location data, the machine’s confidence compounds — and confident entities rank. When half your listings carry an old phone number, a previous address, or three variations of your business name, every inconsistency is a small vote against certainty.

This is why citation work is really data hygiene: the value isn’t in racking up listing counts, it’s in making the entire ecosystem agree about you. It’s the same entity logic that runs through everything Burroughs Digital builds, from schema markup to AI search optimization — because AI systems corroborate business facts from these exact sources too.

What Our Citation Building Includes

Citation audit. A full scan of where your business currently appears, what each listing says, and every inconsistency, duplicate, and gap — benchmarked against the citation profiles of the competitors outranking you.

Core ecosystem coverage. The foundational layer: major data aggregators that feed hundreds of downstream directories, the primary platforms (Google, Apple Maps, Bing Places, Yelp, Facebook), and the general directories that matter. Fixing the aggregators upstream corrects errors at the source instead of playing whack-a-mole downstream.

Industry and local citations. The differentiating layer: the directories specific to your vertical (Angi and Houzz for contractors, Healthgrades for medical, Avvo for legal) and your geography — chamber of commerce, local business associations, community directories. These carry topical and geographic relevance the generic layer can’t, and they’re where our industry knowledge pays off.

Duplicate suppression. Duplicate listings split your reviews and confuse the corroboration signal. We find and kill them — often the most valuable single fix in the audit.

Standardized data, permanently documented. One canonical version of your business data — name, address format, phone, hours, description, categories — applied everywhere and recorded, so every future listing anyone creates starts from the source of truth. (Our clients’ canonical descriptions come from the same entity statements on their website — consistency by design.)

Service-area handling. Home-based and service-area businesses get the compliant version: city-level public data, hidden street addresses where platforms allow, consistent everywhere. Done wrong, this is how SABs end up with exposed home addresses or suspended profiles — see our Google Business Profile practice for the GBP side of the same discipline.

Built Once, Maintained Lightly, Measured Anyway

Citations are front-loaded work: the initial build and cleanup does the heavy lifting, then periodic monitoring catches the drift — aggregators re-importing old data, platforms “helpfully” editing listings, new duplicates appearing. Per our process, citation health is tracked in ongoing engagements rather than rebuilt annually at full price. The work is included in local SEO engagements and available as a standalone cleanup project — see pricing.

Citation Building — Frequently Asked Questions

How many citations do I need?

Quality and consistency beat count. A clean core ecosystem plus the industry and local listings relevant to your market — typically 40–80 meaningful citations — outperforms 300 junk directory submissions, which can actually look spammy.

Do citation links help my rankings like backlinks do?

They serve different jobs: corroboration and local prominence rather than authority transfer. Editorial links are the link-building lane; citations are the data-consistency lane. Both matter; they’re not interchangeable.

My business moved / changed phone numbers. How bad is it?

Common and fixable — but worth fixing promptly, because old data propagates through aggregators and re-infects corrected listings. A move is exactly when a citation cleanup pays for itself fastest.

Should I use an automated citation service?

Aggregator submission services have their place in the stack, and we use the good ones where they’re efficient. What they don’t do is strategy, industry/local selection, duplicate suppression, or judgment — the parts that separate a citation profile from a citation pile.
